HERB: SOAPWORT

(SAPONARIA OFFICINALIS)

Attractive pink/white perennial which grows to 60cm.

The leaves and stems and roots can be used as an alternative to shampoo.

Chop finely, bring to the boil in enough water to cover.

Cool, strain and keep in a jar in the fridge. Use within a week.

Grow in pots to avoid spread.

Moist, well-drained soil.

GROWING TIPS

Direct sow 5mm deep.

Seed requires cold stratification (store in refrigerator prior to sowing) and may take 4 weeks to germinate.

Prick out and pot up.

Do not ingest soapwort.

Potential eye irritant.
