SUNFLOWER: GIANT RUSSIAN

(HELIANTUS ANNUUS)

 

Large heads up to half a metre across but more commonly 30 to 40cm.

 One single giant head per plant; good for kids to draw smiling faces in and feeding to chooks in a giant ‘dinner plate’.

SOIL PREFERENCES

PH 6 – 7.5

Rich, well-drained soil.

GROWING TIPS

Sow seeds in groups of two direct into ground and 30cm apart

The seeds will sprout in 10 to 14 days.

 Wait a week and snip off the weakest seedling and allow the other to grow.

Water and feed well.

Leave the flower till the back is yellow/brown before removing.

Allow to completely dry if you wish to keep seeds for resowing.

You may need to protect from birds.
