PEA: SPANISH SKYSCRAPER

(PISUM SATIVUM)

A rare heirloom growing to an impressive 2 meters and bearing heavy yields. Due to it’s height and prolific production this is a plant that will require supports to stay upright. Bursting with moisture, these delicious beauties can be eaten young or at full pod maturity. If continuously picked vines will produce for a month and likely leave you with enough peas left over to dry and use in your winter soups and casseroles; or why not freeze them?

GROWING GUIDE FOR PEAS

Growing  peas can be a fun and rewarding experience for both experienced and novice gardeners.

Before planting:

1. Choose a location in your garden that receives full sun, with well-drained soil that has

a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0.

2. It’s best to plant your purple podded peas in the early spring, as soon as the soil can be

worked.

Planting:

1. Sow the seeds 2.5-5 cm deep and 5-8 cm apart, in rows that are spaced 45-60 cm

apart.

2. Keep soil consistently moist until seed germinate. Germination usually takes place

within 7-10 days.

Caring for your plants:

1. As the plants grow, provide them with a trellis or support to climb on.

2. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.

3. FertiliSe the plants with a nitrogen-rich fertiliSer when they reach about 15 cm in

height.

4. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, and take appropriate action if necessary.

Harvesting:

1.  Peas are ready for harvest about 65 – 100 days after planting, or when

the pods are plump.

2. When harvesting, pick the pods regularly to encourage the plant to continue

producing.

By following these simple steps, you can successfully grow your own  peas and enjoy their delicious taste  in your cooking!

We hope you enjoy growing these heirloom and often rare varieties. While we grow seed commercially it’s home gardeners who are keeping them alive!
