GROWING GUIDE FOR PURPLE PODDED PEAS

Purple podded peas, also known as purple hull peas, are a type of field pea that are known for their unique, deep purple colour and sweet, nutty flavour. Growing purple podded peas can be a fun and rewarding experience for both experienced and novice gardeners.

Before planting:

1. Choose a location in your garden that receives full sun, with well-drained soil that has

a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0.

2. It’s best to plant your purple podded peas in the early spring, as soon as the soil can be

worked.

Planting:

1. Sow the seeds 2.5-5 cm deep and 5-8 cm apart, in rows that are spaced 45-60 cm

apart.

2. Keep soil consistently moist until seed germinate. Germination usually takes place

within 7-10 days.

Caring for your plants:

1. As the plants grow, provide them with a trellis or support to climb on.

2. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.

3. FertiliSe the plants with a nitrogen-rich fertiliSer when they reach about 15 cm in

height.

4. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, and take appropriate action if necessary.

Harvesting:

1. Purple podded peas are ready for harvest about 65 – 100 days after planting, or when

the pods have turned a deep purple colour and are plump.

2. When harvesting, pick the pods regularly to encourage the plant to continue

producing.

Note: Keep in mind that purple podded peas should not be consumed raw and should be

shelled before cooking. They are typically used in soups, stews, and can be dried, and even pickled for use later.

By following these simple steps, you can successfully grow your own purple podded peas and enjoy their delicious taste and unique colour in your cooking!

We hope you enjoy growing these heirloom and often rare varieties. While we grow seed commercially it’s home gardeners who are keeping them alive!
